A number of years ago, I remember hearing some startling statistics on how many new members of the Florida Bar go out on their own to practice, mainly because they have been unable to get jobs with law firms, state attorneys’ offices, public defenders or elsewhere. Malpractice carriers note that many lawyers in Florida are completely uninsured. At our local professionalism committee meetings, we hear judges complain very often about newer or inexperienced lawyers who act unprofessionally simply because they consider that to be “aggressive” or zealous representation of their clients. All of these facts lead me to believe that law students and newer lawyers do not spend enough time interacting with more experienced lawyers. They do not have the benefit of being around one who can set a good example.
From a purely economic and law management standpoint, lawyers who have had the benefits of mentoring are more productive and independent. They have had more experience and have had the benefit of learning from more experienced lawyers. Thus, they are sooner able to serve clients independently and to achieve competence in making the judgment calls that make up much of what lawyers do.
There are many opportunities in local and state bar committees section for experienced lawyers to act as mentors. My committee is in constant need of volunteer services for the various programs we put on for law schools and for newer lawyers. But there are other ways to be a good mentor, both in your own law firm and through involvement in the bar. Think about it!
